Let’s talk about bedside table alternatives. When you’re in need of a spot for a lamp, a book, and a glass of water, you may immediately start googling “night stands” or “bedside tables”. I’m here to tell you, this is a great opportunity to add some character and interest to your room by thinking outside of the box. Let me explain…
Most bedside tables or nightstands (I’ll use these terms interchangeably), are quite small (say 24″ square give or take). This may work well if you have a very small room, or limited space. I challenge you to look at larger tables, desks, or dressers, especially if you are working with a Queen or King sized bed. Don’t be afraid to fill the space! Do keep in mind the height of the mattress. Ideally the table is the same height or slightly taller than the top of the mattress.
I’ve rounded up some gorgeous inspiration images below and have sourced similar looks for you to consider. (And, check out these links if you need tips on how to create a comfy or well-appointed bed.)
A Rustic Console Table or Desk
This gorgeous antique piece can’t be perfectly replicated, but you can achieve a similar look. You may stumble on a vintage one yourself, or use an option below to create a similar vibe.

2. Target (I would distress this baby myself to mimic the look of the inspiration photo.)
3. Hayneedle (You could leave this unfinished wood as is, or create some character and distress yourself.)
An Oversized Trunk
This gorgeous vintage trunk adds such character and interest to the room. It’s a great spot to stash long term storage items (maybe seasonal bedding or clothes) Be careful to check the height as you’re looking at trunks. The one in the photo above is a bit taller than most, including the ones I’ve linked below.

Mix and Match Desk + Dresser
I love the clean modern lines of the Parsons desk paired with a more traditional dresser. The matching lamps help add symmetry to the room. Pro tip: if the height of the two pieces is different, use large books to raise the lamp on the lower side. This creates the illusion that the tables are the same height.

Wide Nightstands
The function and convenience in having an open shelf or two along with drawer storage can be undeniable. Here are some options that fit that bill, and are wider than your average bedside table.

Campaign Dresser
The hint of brass on an old Campaign dresser or desk adds just the right amount of glam to a room. I’ve found a few great options at affordable prices.

17. Pier1 (I saw lots of this lacquered linen at High Point Market in October!)
