The Ultimate Compliment

A few years ago I was catching up with an old friend. We were sharing current pics of our families, recent travels, and our work. I showed her some photos of finished client projects, and she did what friends do. She gushed over how lovely the spaces were. She said, “you know, the rooms you design remind me of Nancy Myers movies.”

Well, I could have just died and gone to heaven right then and there.

For me, that is genuinely one of the biggest compliments I could receive in regards to the work I do. You may be wondering what in the heck a Nancy Myers movie is, so allow me to enlighten…

Nancy is a filmmaker.

You’ve likely seen It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, the Parent Trap remake, and many more. She’s known for the incredibly gorgeous, inviting, layered, lived-in (in the best way) sets as the homes of her characters. I could just move right into that cozy little English cottage in The Holiday. She so beautifully balances a classic foundation with collected, unique decor.

Over the past couple of years I’ve thought fondly about what a generous compliment that was to receive, and I’ve noodled on what it is that makes Nancy’s sets so inviting, likable, swoon-worthy.

Fast forward to last week at my business retreat.

During one of the sessions, we were asked to articulate who our ideal client would be. Who would we would love to work with on a dream project? This is the type of exercise that’s typical for entrepreneurs, and helps us speak more directly to the people we most resonate most closely with.

I have been SO lucky to have incredible clients to work with over the years. As CHI grows and expands, I want to continue to reach more incredible clients. As I was brainstorming and journaling, one thing that popped to mind was: I would love to work with people who want to live in a Nancy Myers house [whether or not they could articulate it in that way]. People who value the feel, the ethos, the vibe of a home, less than they value the particular pieces in the space.

This is a pretty abstract concept, but it rings so true to me, and I’d venture to guess that you get what I’m trying to say. I’m excited to explore my work and other’s through this lens as time unfolds.

Does this idea resonate with you? Am I making any sense right now? 🤪 If you’re picking up what I’m putting down, please stick around.
