Client Journal: Open Concept Entertaining

Client:  A family who loves to entertain

Space:  An open concept great room with adjacent sunroom

Functional Objective: This family was interested in a space that could flex big (or be more intimate) depending on their needs.  Whether entertaining adults or providing an area for their teenage daughters to entertain their own friends, the space needed to work as a dining room and living room, with the bonus of a separate, but visually-connected sunroom.

Aesthetic Objective:  With such a big space, it was important to create cozy areas for the family to spend time, whether around the dinner table, the coffee table, or simply watching tv.  We designed custom bi-fold doors featuring glass panels to separate the sunroom and family room.  The doors provide some privacy, while still maintaining a feeling of connectedness to the rest of the space.  We chose clear, classic beveled glass and hardware that is consistent with the other doors inside the home. There were a few possibilities for the furniture layout, but ultimately we chose to float the living room sofa in front of the sunroom doors, providing a good flow through the space, while keeping the dining space between the living room and kitchen.

Highlights:  In addition to the three separate spaces we defined for hanging out or entertaining, we re-imagined a beautiful antique that our clients loved, but didn’t quite know how to use in the space.  We turned an oversized, charming antique banker’s desk into a console table in their new dining space.  It’s a showstopper.  On a daily basis, it features lamps and accessories but can double as a serving buffet when needed for entertaining.  We love helping clients transform underused heirlooms into more functional pieces.  Not only is the leather swivel chair gorgeous and comfy, it’s upholstered in upcycled leather hides.
