Client Journal: A Peaceful and Calm Living + Dining Space

Client: A creative, young family who recently built their dream home

Space: An open concept great room, the hard-working heart of the home

Functional Objective: This family was looking to create a space that felt comfortable and complete, with plenty of room for the family to lounge, play board games, and host family gatherings.  Performance fabrics, leather, and wool make for easy clean-up when spills inevitably happen.

Aesthetic Objective:  We wanted to create a space that felt elevated, but still approachable.  We layered textural neutrals throughout the room with the sofa fabric, the chair fabric, the window treatments, and the counter stools. In the dining room we saw an opportunity for a focal point on the back wall.  The gorgeous mural creates an intriguing view, and can be seen throughout the open space.  A subtly patterned drapery fabric compliments the mural without competing.  A bit of color is introduced in the pillows and the living room rug. The styling and accessorizing is simple and understated, creating an open, uncluttered feel.

Highlights:  The oversized sofa has become a family favorite spot for naps.  At 13′ x 9′, there room for almost everyone to stretch out!

Feedback: Now that they’ve been living in and using the space for a while, we recently got feedback from these clients.

“The space Cate created brings so much joy. Every time I walk in it feels peaceful and calm.  It’s not cluttered, and it’s easy to keep clean. It is much more cohesive and beautiful then I would have ever be able to do by myself.  It feels like the most finished of any space in my home, and I love knowing it’s finished and there aren’t any projects  waiting.  All of these things come together to make it feel very relaxing and serene.  People always come into the house and say ‘wow’,
